This page summarizes the various ongoing initiatives we are involved in, some of which we plan and resource ourselves, while others involve campus partners.
We also collaborate on many standalone initiatives, some of which are listed below.
As always, our engagements are guided by our mandate, including an unequivocal dedication to serving the campus’s Indigenous community to the best of our ability and capacity.

FNHL
- The Honour of One is the Honour of All – This digital publication presents all UBC Vancouver Indigenous honorary degree recipients, through whom the values of the University are reflected.
- Indigenous Graduation Celebration – Faculty Deans are invited to our annual graduation celebration to witness students graduating from their programs.
- Indigenous Portal – This site provides information and referrals to Indigenous units and events happening across campus.
- Indigenous Staff & Faculty Lunch Series – We host informal monthly lunches for the campus’s Indigenous staff and faculty, often with a guest speaker.
- Indigenous Winter Craft Fair – We host an annual craft fair involving Indigenous student and off-campus artisans, which the campus community is invited.
- Social Media – We use our Facebook & Instagram channels to promote UBC Indigenous events, opportunities, and news, and to reflect aspects of the Longhouse community.
- The Talking Stick – Every Winter Session, we distribute a weekly student newsletter to Indigenous students across campus.
- šxʷta:təχʷəm student space – While initially developed in partnership with Student Services’ UBC Collegia, we now manage this dedicated space in the Longhouse for the benefit of all Indigenous students.
Partnerships
- Advisory Committee for UBC’s Sustainability Hub – We participate in this University-wide advisory committee on the critical subject of climate change.
- Bridge Through Sport – We host this Musqueam youth program on behalf of the University, which represents an important contribution to the relationship.
- Cedar Summer Camp – We contribute programming space to this Faculty of Science and LFS youth outreach program.
- Come Toward the Fire – We facilitate student engagement sessions at the Longhouse with festival performers.
- Destination UBC (no link) – We work with Student Recruitment and Advising on tours of the Longhouse for newly-admitted Indigenous students.
- Indigenous Career Fair – We work with UBC Student Careers on an career fair for Indigenous students and pending graduates.
- Indigenous Experience UBC – We work with Student Recruitment and Advising on tours of the Longhouse for local Indigenous high school students.
- Indigenous Graduation Events (no link) – We work with the Faculty of Medicine (Indigenous MD program) and the Sauder School of Business (Ch’nook program), who hold a graduation celebration at the Longhouse for graduates of their programs.
- Indigenous Public Art – We produced this map in collaboration with Campus and Community Planning and and Student Communication Services for the benefit of the campus community.
- Indigenous Peoples: Language Guidelines – We worked with Brand and Marketing to develop this guide, including updates, for the benefit of UBC communications staff.
- Indigenous Strategic Plan Implementation Committee – Our Director leads this advisory committee, which has the important role of monitoring the ISP’s implementation.
- Indigenous Strategic Plan Executive Advisory Committee – We participate in this advisory committee, which advises on the ISP’s implementation.
- Indigenous Student Lunch Series – We work with numerous units across campus to co-sponsor healthy lunches for Indigenous students during Winter Session.
- Indigenous Working Group (no link) – We participate in this informal group of student service providers that focuses on Indigenous student issues.
- John P. Bell Global Indigenous Rights Lecture – We contribute Sty-Wet-Tan Great Hall to this CIS-led lecture series, which is open to the campus community and the public.
- Jump Start – We work with Student Recruitment and Advising on tours of the Longhouse for first-year and direct entry Indigenous students.
- Longhouse Tutoring – We work with various Faculty programs to provide tutoring services at the Longhouse.
- President’s Advisory Committee on Indigenous Affairs – We participate in this advisory committee on Indigenous engagement at UBC Vancouver.
- Summer Science Program – We contribute programming space to this Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health outreach program for local Indigenous high school students.
- UBC 23/24 – We provide programming space to this Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health Indigenous cultural safety program aimed at UBC health programs.
- Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation Program – We provide programming space to this national Indigenous youth outreach program.
- Walk Run Club – We work with Kinesiology (Indigenous Studies) and the Indigenous Health and Physical Activity Program to offer a weekly walk-run club for Indigenous students, staff, and faculty.
- Weeks of Welcome – We work with student service providers to host welcome and orientation events at the Longhouse at the start of Winter Session.
Collaborations
- Guidelines for Respectful Image Usage – We collaborated with Brand and Marketing to produce this guide for the benefit of UBC communication staff.
- Indigenous Learning Pathways – We provided content to this CTLT and Human Resources professional development course for UBC staff, including an online 3D rendering of Sty-Wet-Tan Great Hall.
- The Story of the First Nations Longhouse, UBC, 1991-1993 – We collaborated with Xwi7xwa Library to publish an online version of this film, which represents a significant historical record for the University.
- The First Nations Longhouse: Our Home Away from Home – We collaborated with Xwi7xwa Library to digitize this book, which represents a significant historical record for the University.
- 30th Anniversary Celebration – We collaborated with Xwi7xwa Library to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our respective facilities’ opening (1993-2023), which reflects the role and importance of our two facilities to the University’s commitment to Indigenous Peoples.
