Indigenous students at any level who have formally self-identified to UBC as First Nations, Métis, or Inuit can access the šxʷta:təχʷəm student space, located in the west wing of the Longhouse.

Regular Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9:30 AM – 7:00 PM; Friday, 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM

To gain entry, simply tap your UBC card at the south side entrance. There, you will be greeted by šxʷta:təχʷəm advisors who are ready to host and welcome you with a range of events and activities. Upcoming offerings include:

Come and share your creation stories with šxʷta:təχʷəm advisors Josiah, Annelie, and Jessica over s’mores and hot cocoa near šxʷta:təχʷəm from 4–6pm. Gather around the fire pit to keep warm, share histories, and connect with one another.

Curious about baking? End the month on a sweet note by joining šxʷta:təχʷəm advisor Jessica from 1:30–4pm for a Monthly Baking Club session. Participants will make sugar cookies—perfect for sharing with your favourite people. Whether you’re a baking pro or just a beginner, all skill levels are welcome to create and connect with fellow students for delicious treats and good company.

Recurring Weekly Events

Join šxʷta:təχʷəm advisors Annelie and Kiizh on Mondays from 4:30–7pm for a weekly beading circle, where you can explore and celebrate Indigenous artistry while connecting with peers. Share and learn traditional beading techniques and stories while engaging in meaningful cultural exchange. All skills levels are welcome and materials will be provided.

Join šxʷta:təχʷəm advisors Jaz, Gonii, and Iktome on Tuesdays from 4:30–6:30pm in either the student space or Sty-Wet-Tan Great Hall for a weekly drum circle! Indigenous students are invited to bring their drums, rattles, songs, and stories—whatever form of expression speaks to you. First-time learners are encouraged to join, as well.

šxʷta:təχʷəm’s Recovery Circle is a confidential weekly meeting for Indigenous students who have lived experience or struggle with substance use or any type of addictive tendencies or behaviours. Focusing on safety and autonomy, these meetings offer a non-judgmental, harm-reduction space where students can gather in community and support each other on their recovery journeys. It is not strictly abstinence-focused as all pathways to recovery are supported, whether through education, moderation, or cessation. Students interested in joining are welcome to drop by the student space on Thursdays from 6–7pm.
